Lower Newlyn
I like where I live because:
- Only traffic is buses to Tredavoe and occasional agricultural tractor, this is very important
- It is a friendly community
- It is an amazing location tucked away in the countryside near Newlyn & Penzance. Peaceful good community
- I can walk easily to all the shops & facilities & transport
- I am privileged where I live, as I have a house, garden and beautiful sea views. I am walking distance to shops, town and sea port. I have good neighbours and a regular bus service. Who could ask for more?
- Sea views, neighbours, warm sheltered position near bus stop, all of Section B
- Nice view and garden
- It’s a lively interesting village
- Always lived in Newlyn, its my home!
- I have been here 13 years, it is attractive, convenient, has outlook and garden, and I am known to my neighbours as well as being near family and friends
- My husband bought it
- Beautiful location, friendly community, convenient travel to work
- Quite good basic amenities including bakery, butcher, fishmonger, green grocer, deli, convenience store, post office….
- Everything we need is literally on the doorstop
- Newlyn is a working port therefore a proper community with strong sense of identity. Good social links, with viable businesses other than fishing
- There are lots of beaches. The weather is mild and the area is lovely
- Close to Sea, Nice view, can walk to Penzance, Newlyn has good amenities
- Lovely friendly area, handy for everything
- Lovely Neighbours – great community feel & spirit. Convenient for local shops & easy travel to Penzance
- Its quiet, no through traffic, near shops, bus stop, friendly neighbours.
- Convenient for all the facilities I require
- Everything is within a few minutes away
- Its on the flat, near a bus stop, near a shop
- It’s on the level and convenient for buses and shops
- It is a working environment where there is an eclectic mix within the community
- Newlyn is a nice secure area to live in, also has all local amenities
- I have good neighbours, great doorstep views and live in a friendly community
- All I need is close by
- Nice community, very close to everything I need
- Amenities
- It is convenient to everything I need
- It’s a good community, good local shops, access to public transport
- I am Cornish
- Newlyn is our home
- It is part of Penwith which is ‘home’ to my family
- Peaceful, nice neighbours
- Friendly neighbours and good local facilities. Newlyn has good access by bus & train. Newlyn has a good working atmosphere with not too many holiday cottages, good views over Mounts Bay.
- All my needs are met
- It is quiet with little traffic
- Pleasant area, good neighbourhood
- I am fortunate living in an area where most homes are privately owned – owners take pride and look after their properties. Roads/pavements are clean and there is adequate parking for each property
- Quiet and peaceful
- The beautiful scenery, the sense of community. The opportunities to get outside as well as group activities.
- It is on a hill with a view
- I was born and bred in Newlyn
- It’s been my home over 45 years
- It is close to where I work and Penzance
- It is quiet, near the sea, child friendly. I can see the countryside! Can walk into Newlyn easily
- I have the best view in the UK, and I don’t mind steep hills!
I don’t like where I live because:
- Car parking in the village during the holidays is difficult
- The bus service is terrible and too expensive. Difficult to get children to school/college being a one car family
- Car parking can be a big problem – I can be blocked in despite double yellow lines outside my driveway and proximity to traffic lights
- Too much traffic on this often single track, no pavement road
- Too much traffic on this narrow road, often no pavement. Much used by kids going to school, prams, grannies etc. Cut the traffic – make Newlyn safe.
- More development needed in the infrastructure of Penzance – shops, town centre development, leisure provision, community facilities
- I will be forced to move in the next 2 years due to my landlord planning to turn his properties into holiday rentals
- Too hilly
- Lacks modern café/bars. Fish market blocks views of harbour, ugly building. Untidy harbour side. Principal landowner (Stevenson’s) consistently block improvements
- There are two challenges: 1) parking – no parking with the house and only 45/20 mins – 6 spots outside the house which isn’t sufficient for needs. 2) no grassed garden for children to play
- There is a creeping increase in second homes. I.e. empty houses. In my street 25% are empty most of the year. There needs to be legislation these property’s would be entry level homes for young families.
- The seagulls are overwhelming and can be quite dangerous. They spoil the place for us and holiday makers. Poor parking for residents!
- Too close to road, garden is small
- Persistent problem with dog fouling throughout Newlyn and along the promenade to Penzance & footpath to Mousehole. We need dog wardens patrolling & fining offenders. Newlyn & Penzance need cleaning up.
- I do not have a car, but I am told the parking is a problem. In the summer people sleep in their caravans
- There are reasons as well about the parking, it is limited but it makes it worse by fishermen parking in the road up to 10-14 days. They should park in car parks provided.
- Parking!! We were once offered residents parking, but only during working hours. People visiting restaurants, the new cinema when it opens and in B&B’s in the area take up residents parking.
- Resident parking is limited because of all vehicles parked – where the car owners do not live here
- The parking. It should be residents only parking, as people who work nearby leave cars here all the time including fishermen who go for days on end. I actually buy a £20 parking permit per month for the harbour car park as parking is that bad sometimes I cant park nearby
- Parking
- Parking. Especially in the evenings. Concern going out and not back by 6pm as to whether parking left in the area
- Public space should be better maintained. Too many cars, vans
- No parking, bad/poor unitary Council, lack of council contact, council only sends this type of flyer out when they want something
- At the moment there is too much uncertainty regarding the number of houses to be built in locality
- In Newlyn Coombe people ignore deeds which state no parking in road – do something!
- Too many dog owners use the prom, Newlyn green and beach as a convenient toilet for their animals
- The hills are getting steeper as I get older
- It is up a steep hill – as I get older, without a bus service coming up the hill I might have to move which I don’t want to do
- There is no money to do anything e.g.. Maintain gardens, toilets etc. There is a negativity towards any change, even those that would help the young
- Job Prospects
- I love Newlyn
- Too many Eastern Europeans have come to live here. Spoilt the area. Are involved with drug dealing, and prostitute running. Ruined Newlyn, they carry knives as well.
- Bedroom 3 is too small. Area has nothing to improve
What would you most like to change about where you live:
- Very Little
- An end to holiday lets and second homes or some restrictions on buy to let or owning a second home
- More community events but how do you encourage people out of their houses away from their televisions and computers. Facilities for teenagers. Eg table tennis, table football, village hall, cheap café on sea front run by youth for youth.
- Free or cheap overnight parking in car parks. The dust cant always access the back of New Road because of parking on road & pavement
- Stop the constant interference with the telephone cabinet at bottom of Hidden Rd and disruption to service as a result
- Access road to A30 from top of Paul Hill. Ban housing developments with single track old town road access. E.g. Penlee quarry has no proper access.
- Road to A30 from top of Chywoone Hill. Ban house build with only single track access through old town. Not Penlee quarry has only single track access – mad to built there
- Nothing
- Correct financial support to develop community facilities
- I would like to be able to stay here indefinitely. If it was to be improved – some parking for visitors (I don’t have a car) would be nice and alternative heating (gas central heating t present)
- Cannot change anything
- Affordable housing for local people (this does not meal me, I am from outside the county)
- Innovative uses of harbour and environs, thinking beyond purely fishing based industry whose days are numbered in the long run. More parking space.
- More parking – local permits?? 1) ability to use the paid parking behind my house/locally at a reduced fee maybe…? 2) responsible dog owners – we use local areas/paths but hate doing so as so much dog poo everywhere – really disgusting
- Introduce 0% council tax for small businesses and shops and double council tax for all second homes creating a social fund for housing local families
- Reduce the amount of seagulls. More free parking for the residents of the area
- Better pavement outside house, neighbours rubbish cleared
- More parking for residents
- Would love opportunity to self build in Newlyn area. Clean up of dog mess would make a massive difference. Makes the whole area look unloved and is disgusting.
- I have quite a high step to the front door. I am disabled and walk with a stick. Social services offered to put decking and chicken wire but I declined as it would be silly, unsightly and dangerous. Any ideas?
- More waste bins, there used to be one at Newlyn Bridge bus stop. Also dog excrement bins are not enough. More dirty pavements and lanes.
- No change
- Residents car parking. A nightmare not being able to park your car in your street, fishermen leave cars parked for two weeks and the summer is dreadful
- We would like something done about the car parking at the rear of our house. It has gone beyond a joke, we who live here can no longer park as fishermen and all of Newlyn do. Utility vehicles can not get through. Residential parking permits would be good. The car parks are empty why not give free parking 6pm-8am
- Make all Council car parks very cheap to encourage people to the area
- I would like the parking fees in the harbour to be reduced so fishermen do not park in the road where I live.
- Parking! (Continued from previous) in an already crowded parking area, we would need provision overnight, or for more hours of the day, with maybe a 20 minute allowance for shoppers/school.
- Residents parking only
- As above
- Improve parking provision/ability
- Parking for residents living in West Tce, Charles St, Treneglos Tce, Carne Road, Newlyn school side of New Road will need 30 mins allowance for parents doing the school run
- Reduce impact of private cars and vans
- No English second home owners, more Cornish on the council
- More buses
- Clear up the house building policy so one know what is happened
- Council/Police action to stop residents parking on pavements and both sides of road. Hazards for disabled/prams. Action needed.
- The idea of having water taxis around Mounts Bay, no dogs on the beach. Make the area around the lido pedestrian only. Also make Market Jew Street a pedestrian precinct
- Remove road humps asap, ban car parking on roads where householders have garages and drives
- Limit residents on street parking throughout the estate STRICTLY to loading/unloading only. (all houses have both garages and off-road drive ways so on-street parking is pure idleness)
- Bus route to Penzance to call at this estate
- Improve and make safer cycling between Newlyn and Penzance town centre – cycle paths through Penlee Park and Morrab Gardens
- Nothing
- Nothing
- Investment in a marina, investment in the promenade, investment in social housing, investment in transport (public)
- Reduce the Council tax to less that £200 a year
- Nothing
- Bus service
- Limit immigrants in one swoop, by removing all the working benefits they get. Housing, child tax etc.
- Pollard the trees at the bottom of OLD PAUL HILL – they are becoming a traffic risk – but the council is ignoring my advice! Stupid!
